IP TelephonesQ. Im hoping that someone could help me with a little question I have. I'm looking to set up IP phones at 12 sites that are already connected to a fibre network. The phones shall only be use internally to call from one station to another and there will not be any outside line. My question is, can IP phones be implemented in this situation with only the phones without other hardware such as router or servers. Basicly I would like to know if there's a phone out there that I can just plug into the Ethernet connection, configure the address and hopefully will work. A. It seems odd to me that someone would want to spend so much money on expensive phones, when all they have to do is what could be done with a few cheap analog POTS phones. I'm not certain of the costs, but it seems to me that the savings on a dozen phones would easily pay for a small PBX to do the work, with money left over. Not always. I have seen many situations where such a solution was very practical. There are lots of places where POTS lines or cabling are not readily available for any number of reasons, but IP and ethernet connectivity is. And if the different sites are located some distance from each other, outside lines and long distance calls would be involved vs. just riding on the WAN. In addiition, simple "single line" IP telephone sets are now very cost effective, from $100 to $250 each, one time cost. What?!? Please spare me. There is a TON of voice cable and a regular analog phone off a PBX has about 100x the features of the typical IP phone. This isn't bringing up distance limitations and the really crappy voice quality you can get off an IP set that isn't tuned to perfection off the best switch money can buy. It would be easier for me to use IP phones compared to analog phones since there is already an existing Ethernet network between these buildings. I'm sure that laying another set of cables for the analog phones would be way more expensive Better take your question to comp.dcom.voice-over-ip, these phone people hate the data folks...
