Is the Meridian a hybrid PBX?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. Is the 11c classified as a hybrid? Lucent sales says that it is but I cannot substantiate the claim. The line between digital PBX and hybrid PBX is a bit of a blur to me. Any comments would be appreciated.

A. Lucent Sales has the Nortel product line confused. The Norstar might be a Hybrid, tbut the Option systems are as pure as "PBX" gets. The fact is, naming it Hyprid, PBX, or just plain "Phone System" does not matter. Look in the Yellow Pages and count the number of companies that can support your choice - to me, that is half the battle. It's a PBX. Its just a smaller PBX (w/ a smaller Maximum Capacity). A hybrid is a system that can function in Key mode (one line appearance for each line) or PBX mode (dial 9 or some other access code to select a pool of lines). As an example, a Lucent Rep may call the Merlin Legend (aka: Lucent Legend or Merlin Magix) a PBX. That truly isn't. It started off as a key system and they added the PBX functionality later. In fact, you can select the mode of operation. Square/Key, Hybrid, or PBX (a true PBX won't have these options, I don't beleve). When you select Square/Key, it literally puts an appearance of each line on each phone (once you tell it how many lines are in your system). When you select Hybrid, it assigns (I think) the first line to every phone and pools the others (for Dial 9 access). Both Key and Hybrid modes have Intercom Buttons and Hybrid mode has dedicated POOL buttons for you to access those pools of lines. When its in PBX mode, Intercoms go away and you now have extension numbers. In theory this is for DID service. You can place individual lines on a phone if you want, but in general, when in PBX mode, the only buttons on the phone are Extension number buttons. These are how you access pools, features (unless specifically programmed on dedicated buttons), etc. They are known as SA (system access) buttons. This mode (PBX) is how the Meridian 1 functions all the time. Its the native mode. You build extension numbers on the phones and that can be your DID (if you can find a matching DID range from your local phone company). Usually you make your extension numbers match the DID range purchased. All features are either accessed through programmed feature buttons or these extension buttons. Hybrid. Or another answer might be either....depending on a simple command entered during initial setup. Even the big Meridian1 has characteristics of each of the following three description. There was a time when a system was one or the other. As far as I'm concerned, these terms are only valuable for history books now. -Hybrid Key System: A system that has characteristics of both a key system and a PBX system. -PBX - Private Branch Exchange: A Communication Switch used to connect customer telephones (and related equipment) to LEC central office lines (trunks), and to switch internal calls within the customer's telephone system. Modern PBXs offer numerous software-controlled features such as call forwarding and call pickup. A PBX uses technology similar to that used by a central office switch (on a smaller scale). (The acronym PBX originally stood for "Plug Board Exchange".) -Key System: A telephone system that provides all users with immediate access to outside lines when they press one or two dedicated keys without needing operator's services. For example, a six-button key system could have a hold button, four outside lines and an intercom. Key systems typically have fewer lines and telephones than a PBX system. A key system can also be used with a PBX or Centrex system.
