Home phone system?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. I'm looking for recommendations of a lower-cost home phone system. Needs to be able to work with run-of-the-mill standard '2500-compatible' touch-tone phones (I do not want to have business-type instrucments throughout my house). I don't want all the bells and whistles, just perhaps 2 or 4 lines in from the street, and about 12-16 outlets in my house.

A. Panasonic makes some very good 2 to 4 line phones for use with standard phone wiring. (No KSU) True. They make some decent phones. They also make at least one which I have grown to hate with a passion. Their 2-line, 900 mHz, "Gigarange" cordless phone / digital answering machine is quirky, performs poorly if you get more than 50 feet away from the base and often refuses to respond to key presses. I'm about ready to make a phone-shaped hole in the cement with the darn thing. The model number is KX-TC1890B. I have used the Panasonic "EASA-PHONE" 4 line (non-KSU) for many years now and can recommend it heartily. They have been just about the most reliable telephones I own. I am switching now to their 1232 key system only so I can get paging and intercom and, just so you know, the 1232 system as well as the one under it are both hybrid systems - they will work with both digital and conventional analog telephones. I believe they use one pair for digi and the other for analog. I have the stuff here, but won't connect it until I have my lightning problems solved. I bought the 2 x 7 system that smarthome.com sells. I've had it for almost a year and it works fine. I also got the compatible Panasonic door station. The whole thing was under $500 and gives me PBX, intercom, fax detection/forwarding, and door phone in one. They have a 4 x 16 version now from the same company. Now if I could just get my family to remember how to transfer calls!
