Home\Office phone system questions ?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. I just moved in to a new house and while i'm rewireing parts of it i've seen that i need some new phone jacks. After looking i've seen i need more then a few new phone jacks so i thouhght i'd redo the whole house and i have a few questions. 1. do new houses\wireing normaly use RJ45 for phones? If so what do you do with the extra wires since phones use RJ11 2. I saw smarthome olny sells one panasonic system, who else sells other systems like that, since i dont think that there is olny one system on the market.

A. I stuck with 6-conductor RJ-11 jacks. You can use RJ-45 jacks for phones, but sometimes RJ-11 plugs don't fit nicely, or they wiggle loose. The extra wires are used for Line 2, 3 and 4. You can also save the wires as spares incase a pair goes bad. Others have wired Ethernet + voice on one run, but this is a bad idea since Gigabit Ethernet uses all 4 pairs. I think Panasonic is the major SOHO PBX system. There is one other one, but the name escapes me at the moment. I don't have the Panasonic PBX, but I've heard that it's complex to configure. Anyhow, it's debatable if a PBX is worth it for home use ... especially since you'll need multiple lines to enable voicemail, certain transfers, and external conference calling to work properly. In that case, don't bother with a PBX system. If you want the ability to transfer calls between handsets, conference, consider buying a multi- handset cordless phone instead (i.e. Panasonic Gigaset). For up to 16 phones I recommend the TMC Epic 4000. It requires NO KSU and will work with existing loop wiring while performing as well as the Panasonic. The phones are under $200 each and there are no other things to buy. I have 16 in my home and I'm very pleased with them. And RJ11 will fit into an RJ45. But you don't want that. Becuase someone will stick the wrong plug in. If you have CAT5 to a location, you can use 2 pair for ethernet and another pair for phone - in the box separate it to 2 outlets. And people will plug the phone wire into the (rj11) phone jack and your life will be good. Put an RJ45 there for network, or don't. You're choice.
