A good deal for low-cost, low-usage cell phone service ?Q. Lots of features, including voice mail, text messaging (15 cents to send, free to receive), caller ID, etc., all included. No extra "system access fee" either. Virgin Mobile sells several different phone models, starting as low as $49. Phones are also sold by Future Shop, Best Buy, Zellers, and Wal- Mart (although in-store prices may not match on-line prices). They include $10 in air time. Plus you can get an additional $10 "Kickback" with a referral from an existing VM customer (like myself). (It is better to buy a phone from a retail store, as opposed to from Virgin Mobile themselves.) A. So if I have a (CDMA) phone that was originally acivated on the MTS network but is no longer under contract, can I use this phone with the Virgin pay as you go plan instead of buying a phone? Unfortunately, no. You can only use the Virgin-specific CDMA phones. I asked this same question when I signed up. "They said" that the Virgin phones had Virgin-specific software in them. Now, I guess you could verify this by going to the VM web site, and follow the links to activate a new phone. There will be a screen to enter the ESN of your phone, so you could try entering the ESN of your MTS phone. It'll cost you nothing to try, but I'm pretty sure it will tell you the ESN isn't for a VM phone. One thing you can do is migrate from some other cell carrier to Virgin and keep your present cell number. Wireless Number Portability is now available between cell carriers, and just after that service was made available a few months ago, VM had a rush of people moving to them. (They had offered some kind of attractive "welcome bonus" of airtime.)
