USPS lost my income tax return..

Edwards Finance > Loans

Q. On March 26th, 2003 I sent my both federal and state return via USPS Certified Mail. While the state return arrived a couple days after I sent it (March 31st), there is no evidence that my federal income tax return was deliveded to IRS service center. The only trace that it was sent is the message I get when I enter the tracking number for that package. It says more or less the following: "Your item was accepted at 3:41 pm on March 26, 2003 in (name of my local post office with area code) No further information is available for this item." And that's it... So I am affraid that USPS lost my income tax return and probably they don't have any idea where to find it. I don't want to end up paying late filing fees and interest penalties. Although I did my part, and althoug apparently USPS screwed it up, more than likely I'll be the one who will have to pay. So what should I do? The clock is ticking and there's not much time left. Should I send another income tax return with a note explaining why I am doing it? Any ideas?

A. -If you filed a balance due return you should watch your bank account for the check to clear. The checks are deposited right away while the returns themselves are shelved for processing until after all the refund returns filed on or about April 1
