Some questions about estimated tax , anyone help me??Q. I heard that if yo umake good income you must file estimated taxes every quarter. I was wondering: You are excepted from this rule if your federal withholding this year is equal or exceeds your total tax liability last year (line 61 on income tax form asking for total taxes). But to determine the federal withholding, if you are filing a joint income tax return, is it based on the federal income tax withholding of both husband and wife or just the one making most of the money? For example, me (the wife) makes about 5k a month and need to file estimated taxes , but didn't file for the year, can I be excepted from the late estimated underpayment tax penalties? So far i only have $167 federal income tax withheld from my wages (of actual job) and my husband has $740 federal income tax withheld from his actual job. My total tax liabilityl last year (line 61 of federal income tax form ) was $1900. Can I tell my husband to have his boss take out an extra $300 every 2 weeks off his paycheck for federal income tax withholding till the end of this year? If so, would I still be faced with any penalty? Also, do California taxes work the same way? A. Question: I heard that if yo umake good income you must file estimated taxes every quarter. But to determine the federal withholding, if you are filing a joint income tax return, is it based on the federal income tax withholding of both husband and wife or just the one making most of the money? Answer: Both, assuming you file joint returns in both the previous and current year. Question: For example, me (the wife) makes about 5k a month and need to file estimated taxes , but didn't file for the year, can I be excepted from the late estimated underpayment tax penalties? Can I tell my husband to have his boss take out an extra $300 every 2 weeks off his paycheck for federal income tax withholding till the end of this year? If so, would I still be faced with any penalty? Answer: What do you mean "didn't file for the year"? Estimated taxes? A tax return? What do you mean "_MY_ total tax liability". If you're married and file a joint return next year, the relevant number is either taken from your joint tax return or the sum of the numbers on your individual tax returns. If any required return is not filed, you can't use the safe harbor unless no tax would have been due if the return was filed. You can ASK your husband to ASK his employer to take out an extra $300 every 2 weeks. Neither your husband nor his employer is necessarily required to comply. Question: Also, do California taxes work the same way? Answer : More or less. The tax law just changed this year, but I believe they conformed to Federal law. The new forms aren't out yet.
