Finance Q&A

casting sand on Extreme Engineering Wednesday night.

Edwards Finance > General Engineering

Q. What was that casting sand they were casting steel with on Extreme Engineering Wednesday night? It set up hard and they cast the parts with no flask. They glued the cope and drag together.

A. -Likely you saw shell moulds. The same process can be used to make cores. Two heated steel dies come together. The sand mix of silica sand and urea based glue is dumped in. The steel old is tumbled and the sand cures against the inside of the old. The dies open and out pops part of a shell old. It could be a cope, drag, or half of a core. They are hard like your wife's overbaked cookies that she lets you eat and saves the other for company. There are more modern glues now but most of them cure under the heat of the dies. I don't know the level of precision attainable today but when the technology came out engine blocks drastically reduced in weight. Less machining allowances and closer location of cylinders allowed this. - Google Linocure-it is a resin you mix with dry sand and can be hand formed around a pattern. It hardens in about an hour and is ready for pouring. Made by Ashland Chemical Co. in Ohio. It costs 109.00$ for 5 gallons, and that is enough for 2000 lgs of sand. It is 2 part, catalyst and resin that are easily mixed. Check it out-I have used it for years.
