Finance Q&A

Female engineers:(was scholarships/grants)

Edwards Finance > General Engineering

Q. I am the person who posted the original Scholarships/Grants thread. I am the parent of a HS junior and was curious about scholarship availability at private schools. I received a lot of very informative responses, and I want to thank all of you for your replies. This brings me to another question. I mentioned that my daughter plans to study engineering. A number of people implied that as a female engineer, she would have an easier time with admissions/scholarships than if she were studying something else or were male. Perhaps I'm naive, skeptical, or not wanting to get my hopes up, but is this really true? Does anyone have hard evidence of this or is it just a feeling? One person mentioned he met a girl at CMU with a good financial aid package, but he also mentioned that he got a good package from CMU. So this is directed specifically at female engineering students, their parents, or anyone else who has first hand knowledge of this situation: 1. Do you feel you were treated more favorably in the admissions/financial aid process than if you had been male or planning to study another subject? 2. If yes, how do you know this? Did you have lower test scores/grades than your male counterparts or was it something else? 3. Were you accepted to schools that you previously believed might be out of your reach?

A. It is terrific to see a parent who is so involved in helping her daughter prepare for college or university studies. However, I wonder why you need to second guess her potential by examining all the ways that she might gain an advantage in the process just by being a woman. You could best help her by supporting her effort to perform excellent level work, which would provide engineering schools few reasons not to accept her. Do you not worry about the negative impact that dwelling upon gender based ability could have on your daugher's self esteem? Contrary to much of what you might read in this newsgroup, superb academic performance, a balanced life, and a passion for learning will get you in just about every elite engineering school in the country. Why not do everything you can to help her achieve at high levels today and let the process work as it has done for thousands of engineering students before?
