engineeringEdwards Finance > General Engineering Q. Why is it that engineers have spent an ungoddly amount of time in the library/engineering building for weeks on end, only to make so so money. I see plenty of people who have everything but an engineering degree make much better money it the business world. Our sales personnel are driving mercedes. None of our engineers are. Don't you think we ought to be making as much as lawyers or doctors. We put in some real brain power into our jobs and did our time in school. A couple of reasons I can think that engineers don't get paid well is as follows: 1) Nobody is demanding more money? 2) There are alot of people calling themselves engineers and are not. If they do some uneducated work that fails miserabley, it wrecks the engineering title. If somebody dodes not have a degree in engineering - techinican or something should be their title. Not engineer. Not saying this in an arrogant way - You won't go to a person who calls himself a doctor yet whom never went to school. 3) Some engineers are not using what they have learned at school and making some very poor designs. See this at my work often - "Just keep throwing metal at it till it don't deflect." Not doing a single deflection calculation(which they are very capable of doing). A. You might want to think on the positive side - as a mechanical engineer I do most of my own car repairs, can better assess the engineering of a vehicle in the first place, can do a better job of choosing and fixing appliances and I enjoy what I do. Why would you want to drive a Mercedes anyway - they are rear wheel drive pigs that need a lot of expensive maintenance. The real question you should ask is what do YOU want to be. I personally could not be a defense lawyer, I hate even going to the doctors and I like to dress casually - so that rules out being a salesman - plus I like being an engineer.
