Aerospace Engineering
I just had to fill out my course form for next year, and the courses I'm taking will more or less take me into most any Engineering course. I'm curious about a few things. 1) Is the Aerospace Engineering field in demand now? 2) Are there other higher-prfile jobs like this... What I mean is something other than Ground Control, or those like that. I'd prefer to work with Math and Physics.> 1) Is the Aerospace Engineering field in demand now? First thing you have to real...

Electrical Engineering.
Seriously, I need some guidance here, folks. Applying: CalPoly SLO, UC-Berkeley, UCLA, WUSTL, Emory, *Rice*, UChicago, Stanford, a few state schools for safety. My top choice in this list is Rice and I'd apply ED if anyone thinks I've got a chance... do I? Major: Computer/Electrical Engineering. Future Occupation: Intellectual Property Lawyer -- Attended a large magnet school in s.cal then moved to a VERY large public school in n.cal Rank: Top 5% (class of 900). S...

CORNELL COMPETITIVE?
I have heard that Cornell is the easiest Ivy to get into and I was wondering what any of you thought about that. Just how competitive is it in general? (SAT avgs, acceptance rates, stuff like that)-According to the 1997 US News rankings, Cornell had an acceptance rate of 33%, SAT 25th-75th percentiles of 1250 - 1430, and 81% of freshman from the top 10% of their HS class. Overall, US News put Cornell's selectivity rank at #15 in the country. While Cornell might be one of the "easier...

whats the difference between an electrical engineer and a electronic engineer? I'm guess electronic engineers focus more on solidstate devices.
whats the difference between an electrical engineer and a electronic engineer? I'm guess electronic engineers focus more on solidstate devices.-I think electronic engineer focuses more on low-power solid circuits used for using electrical signal to communicate and electrical engineers focues on transformers, generators, motors, electric heating, wiring and anything to do with doing using electricity to do work. -Have a look at ; www.engology.com ...

"Electronics" engineering or "electronic" engineering?-Electronics Technician (and I are one . Electrical Engineering Student Interested In Automotive Industry
I will be finishing my engineering degree soon. The university I attend doesn't have any official specialization for an undergraduate degree. As such, there is no way for me to learn anything automotive unless I do it on my own. I have started to read about car basics like the engine, suspension and performance. What I would like to get into is the electrical/electronic systems in the cars. I don't have any practical embedded programming experience (nothing but school) but I have...

WANTED: Old electrical engineering book!!
I'm a graduate student working on MRI at UT Houston; I've lost my copy of Terman, F.E. _Radio and Electronic Engineering_, 1955 (McGraw Hill) and am desperate to get a copy. I've checked all the used book sellers around houston to no avail. I'd also love to get my hands on a copy of Terman, F.E. _Radio Engineer's Handbook_, 1943 (McGraw Hill) In fact, I'd be interested in any books from the McGraw-Hill electrical engineering series published in the 50-60's. My question i...

Electrical Engineering Careers in USA
I got a publication from IEEE last week with an article about the US EE job market. From peak EE unemployment of 6-7% a couple of years ago we are back to approx 2% EE unemployment, about the same as in 2000-2001 before the job situation took a dive. The article points out that while that sounds like a good thing, the number of US EEs dropped from 440,000 in 2000-2001 to 340,000 in 1st quarter 2005, a drop of 100,000 EEs (and a large percentage drop). That drop is a combination of n...

Electrical engineering career.
I plan to major in Electrical Engineering, but a friend of my fathers, who is a electrical engineer, told me that I would have to go out of state (I am in Florida) to find a good high pay job. Is this true? I would like to stay close to all my family. (alot of my relatives live nearby.)-I don't know how it is now, but Florida use to be the hot spot for Electrical Engineering jobs. No one knows now what the job situation will be like by the time you graduate. -That depends on wh...

Is software engineering really "engineering"
I happen to believe that the discipline of "software engineering" can be as rigorous as other, more tranditional, engineering. I also believe that nobody deserves to be called an "engineer" unless that person has, at least, a four year degree in engineering. Software engineering typically does not require the knowledge of chemistry, or physics, that is required of the more traditional engineering. But, I don't know that civil engineering requires that either. I really don't k...

Electrical Engineering College?
There is no such beast. An undergrad degree in EE will not specialize in audio (at least at any of the colleges I'm aware of). If you go the EE route you will have to wait until at least the Masters level before you will get to work on audio stuff (that is, you will do research often of your own choosing at this level). I was a recording engineer first (still am part time), then went back to school and am now in a PhD program and I guarantee you traditional engineering curriculum has...

Electrical Engineering College?
I an 16 and i want to be a recording engineer. I have talked to some people who say that i should get my degree in Electrical Engineering specializing in audio. What do you think of that? Any suggestions would be appreciated.-I imagine there are at least a hundred schools in the US where you can get a *quality* EE degree. That won't necessarily help you with anything particular in recording, but you'll have a much more solid idea about "how things work", and you might find somethin...

Careers in electrical engineering
I'm a high school Junior trying to decide what I want to major in in college. One of the majors I was considering was electrical engineering, because I like to know how things work. Anyways, I was wondering exactly what kind of jobs are availabe to people with a degree in electrical engineering. I would appreciate it if any engineers out there would tell me about their jobs and what they do on a day-to-day basis. My experience has been rather eclectic. I have 20+ years of experienc...

Electrical Engineering Courses
Can anyone recommend an accredited college offering a BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering online. I'm looking for a school that offers the complete degree program.-So is everybody else. You can check with alt.education.distance, but I think you're gonna find that there really isn't anything that's accredited by anyone you'd care to associate with. This is unfortunate, because there's really no reason that someone can't get a perfectly good education by correspondence an...

Electrical Engineering Course Material
I have just started playing with electronics, this was because my brother needed a device to do a job and I figured I could do it with a PIC and a few components and modifying an existing device, his only other option was to pay serious money to have a company do the role of the device. Great thing about this is that I'm making some nice money out of it, but I really enjoy messing about with electronics. Now I was wondering what would be the best material to study, I'm currently doin...

Electrical Engineering degree following Liberal Arts degree
I graduated from college with a liberal arts degree. I was wondering how it might be possible for me to go back to school to get a degree in electrical engineering. Does anyone had any experiences with this kind of thing? General electrical handbook
Does anyone know of any really good, extensive / general electrical handbooks / reference books? Maybe something similar to "The art of electronics" by Horowitz and Hill, but more about electrical things and not only electronics.-A good one is "The American Electrician's Handbook", by Terrell Croft and Wilford Summers. -The Construction Bookstore puts out a quarterly catalog that lists many such books. They are online at http://www.constructionbook.com They seem to have the ...

Are hams better electrical engineering students?
I would've inserted the word 'necessarily' in "...the grades you get in school don't-That's an interesting perspective. I've found that employers of engineers never, ever ask how well one did in school unless hiring a new graduate with no other experience. Instead, they're intensely interested, as they should be, in what the candidate has accomplished in his career, as the best indicator of what he's likely to do in the future. I'd rather have my heart transplant done by a surgeon w...

Electrical Engineering vs. Electrical Engineering Technology Salaries
I am just a high school student who is in between the two majors. Experience with doing a PhD in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering or Finance ?
Is anyone over here gone through a PhD program in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering ? I am interested in getting an idea of the graduate school experience especially from folks who are in a PhD program in CS/EE or Finance or have gone through one. In this group, I have read occassionally "horror" stories of graduate life in the sciences. Guitar pickup physics: electrical engineering help
I'm doing a computer simulation project where I am trying to accurately reproduce the sound of an electric guitar with computer software. To do that I need to know a little more about the physics of the guitar pickup. I know that is consists of a fixed magnet around which is a coil of wire. The electric string is simply steel which is magnetized. When the magnetized string moves through the field of the pickup's fixed magnet *something happens with electromagnetic flux*, and by i...

Electrical Engineering schools in Canada and the U.S.
But my ranking would show (using my confidential methodology) how Canadian schools are better than most of the ones in the US. Canadian schools hard pressed for publicity would trumpet my rankings on their web site, which would only increase my book sales.-Let me count.. There are some 90 or so campuses in Canada that could use one each in their library. Most students, with access to a photo copier can copy the entire Canadian content in the report for about 50 cents so you're not ...

engineering graduate school question
I know this isn't really a technical question, but I was wondering if anyone in here might be able to offer some insight on this. I recently got my BSEE, and am considering going for a Masters, and my question is, is it worth it? Aerospace Engineering rankings by Students Review
Everybody either loves or hate college rankings. Some like me can't do with them as a guide for comparing colleges. I went to the http://www.studentsreview.com/ website and feeling bored, happened to stumble upon its SR Rankins facility. I selected 'Program/Education Quality' as the Dynamic Ranking factor and 'Aerospace Engineering' as an Additional Optional Ranking Restriction, without selecting any other variable. Lo and behold! The list below was obtained. To my great joy...

Hope to work in a big research lab, what should I do?
Most people will not feel like talking with you for more than a few seconds. You will need to find what we call a _mentor_. Someone who cares and who will be interested in you and your future. You may have to talk with 10-20-30 people to find just one. And, its good to find at least two or three who will help you. You did not tell us where you are now, what amount of education you have, what subjects you already know, what jobs you have already have. This will help us help you.-T...

Job Security and Salary for Electrical Engineering

Non Electrical Engineering asking for possible solutions to a problem
I'm writing software to track billiard balls on a pool table. I need an accurate way to track the balls. Each ball would have to be uniquely identified. I've thought about using a video camera, but it would require a high ceiling to be overhead or some complex calculations if it is at an angle, then there is the issue of writing recognition code to find the balls. I suspect it wouldn't be the most accurrate or the fastest solution in the world. Is anyone aware if it is techni...

Are hams better electrical engineering students?
Have any study been done on this? I'm surprised that the ARRL hasn't researched this. (Or have they?) I am willing to bet that electrical engineering majors who operate ham radio (or who participate in other EE-related hobbies) tend to do better than their nonham counterparts. I know I would have been a MUCH better student if I had been a ham radio operator when I entered college as an electrical engineering major. Without ham radio (or any other practical experience), SWR, S...

Calculator for electrical engineering student
I'm starting back to school this fall for a degree in EE and I'm wondering what calc the majority of you prefer, used as student, or use in your daily work. I currently have a Ti-85 which has served me well for many years, but after doing a little checking, it seems that it's way outdated compaired to what high end calcs can do today. I'll be starting in Calc 2 this fall and a clac based physics course to give you an idea of what my immedite needs are. Money isn't much of an issue...

electronic vs electrical engineering
I recently visited Cal Poly Pomona and discovered that they have a Computer/Electrical Engineering major and an Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology major. Whats the difference between the two majors? Electric vs. Electrical
How to decide which of these two words to use? Example: I can say "electric cable". yet i think i can still say "electrical cable", can I? I know, on the other hand, that i cannot say "electric engineer". The proper designation is of course "electrical engineer"-As the working of the thing gets more complex you move from electric to electrical. So 'an electric fire' but 'an electrical circuit'. -The adjective "Electronic" actually implies more than just the complexity of a circui...

My question to all you professionals out there is what are your views on college versus university?
I have been following this newsgroup for roughly a year now, and I must say it's very interesting and I'm learning alot. I'm a third year electrical engineering student at a local college in Canada. My question to all you professionals out there is what are your views on college versus university? I understand and totally agree that university provides a higher level of education, but does that make me (as a college graduate) somehow inferior to someone who has an EE degree? Basi...

What does an electrical engineer do?
I will be a high school senior next year. Everyone is telling me to start planning my life now. Well, as easy as that sounds, I don't really know what I want to do. I would like to do something in the aerospace/science/engineering field. Anyway, I have noticed that there are some great scholarships/programs with electrical engineering as a major. If I attend a good school and major in EE, what kind of jobs would there be upon exiting college? In short, what do you guys do?-Elect...

Lawyers as Engineers?
I got into a debate via a list-serve about whether lawyers in a typical State of the USA are, or are not, allowed to do things that would ordinarily be considered the practice of Electrical Engineering and require Professional Engineering licencing. Basically, a law professor who must remain anonymous asserted that since legal practice is an arm of government, "and many other reasons, what is authorized for legal practitioners is not subservient to the laws regarding the practice...

geometry of electric engineering
I'm doing a project on the geometry of electric engineering. I would appreciate all the help i could get. There would be a lot of possible answers here: - the geometry of electic and magnetic fields in motors, sensors etc. - the geometry of mocrwaves in microwave ovens, ... Let me just give one I am currently working on (as a geometer in a collaboration with electrical engineers). You have a network of electrical sensors, measuring distances, directions to other sensors and bea...

"The Engineer"
Does anybody know if the publication "The Engineer" from the 19th century is available on line anywhere? I know its a long shot. I have searched many sources already.I just checked the local university library card catalogs. There are three publications by that name -- one by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, still in print, one published by Western Electric (former title Western Electric Engineer, and also still in print) and a third published in London by Morgan-Grampian, apparentl...

I got my BS degree in electronics engineering a few months ago. I wanted to go to graduate shool but no place would except me, not because I don't know electronics, I am great at electronics, but because I got a learn disapility in reading, writeing and spelling. That caused my gpa to be 2.9, my disabilitys efected every class because every class requirs writeing. now I am not complaneing that I got to write, writeing is very importent. But I am complaning that graduate scho...

diff between electrical and electronic engineer
whats the difference between an electrical engineer and a electronic engineer? I'm guess electronic engineers focus more on solidstate devices-I think electronic engineer focuses more on low-power solid circuits used for using electrical signal to communicate and electrical engineers focues on transformers, generators, motors, electric heating, wiring and anything to do with doing using electricity to do work. -Have a look at www.engology.com It might help. -Generally, "ele...

Electronics Engineering
I am new to this group and I am planning on attending school this september for a Bachelor's in Electronics Engineering. I plan on attending Devry in Irving, TX and I have been scouring the internet looking for opinions on the school and/or further information from anyone who has attended. The only things I have found seem to be from people who have never attended college and do not understand the ups and downs of school (i.e. "They keep changing the classes," or "They don't offer ...

PhD in Industrial Engineering
Does anyone know of a PhD program in Industrial Engineering that is offered totally through distance learning?-There are none with recognized accreditation in the US. There could be some interesting possibilities through British or Australian research doctorates. DeMontfort, for instance, does a range of technology doctorates. Residency is negotiable. I am hearing from more and more Americans who have been able to work out a nonresident approach, or one short visit, but it takes a ...

engineering student needs advice
I'm currently a engineering student trying to decide between mechanical or electrical engineering. I'd like to work in the automotive industry ideally for one of the big three. I'm not sure which degree I should be pursuing. Both electrical and mechanical sound interesting to me and I'm trying to decide on the one that will better my future with an automotive company. Heres some things I've heard about the fields. I've heard that mechanical engineers are not as in high demand as el...

Newbie from Purdue
I've just started reading the newsgroup and figured out how to post! I am a graduate student at Purdue Univ. (West Lafayette, Indiana) studying Electrical Engineering. I graduate in May and can't wait to be through with school! I will be going to Austin, TX to start a new job (and conveniently, my boyfriend-of-4-yrs has a new job there as well!). I am relatively new to quilting. I've really only made one...I started it my senior year in highschool and finished it my sophomore...

Electrical Engineering Newgroup?
I have noticed that there is not a newsgroup dedicated to Electrical Engineering in particular. There are groups for divisions such as lighting, control, TV etc. But there is not a group for more general discussion on other matters. I have interest in power, control and alternative energy, plus a variety of other area, which are not covered. Any comments will be welcome.-I have tried to access that newsgroup, but there is no such group. Have you accessed this newgroup. If...

Electrical Engineering schools in Canada and the U.S
I have a choice to study electrical engineering in either Canada or the United States. My high school math and physics marks are in the high-80's and should get me into most schools- I hope. Can any one here suggest where I might find information that would allow me to compare various electrical engineering programs in North America?-The Gourman Report ranks undergrad programs in the United States but some Canadian schools are also mentioned.
