Finance Q&A

My question to all you professionals out there is what are your views on college versus university?

Q. I have been following this newsgroup for roughly a year now, and I must say it's very interesting and I'm learning alot. I'm a third year electrical engineering student at a local college in Canada. My question to all you professionals out there is what are your views on college versus university? I understand and totally agree that university provides a higher level of education, but does that make me (as a college graduate) somehow inferior to someone who has an EE degree? Basically, if all things were equal would you prefer a university graduate over a college graduate, and why? I've always wanted to go to university, but for some reason I feel the education there is very broad based (I could be wrong) whereas my college program (Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Technology) focuses more in industrial automation, and a bit into the power system side. I've always enjoyed all things electrical ever since I was a wee 6 year old (I'm now 21), I work part-time as an electrician, and I find what I learn in school to be interesting, so I believe I'm in the right field. Is there any advise you would give me, going a different route? Any mistakes I'm making? Something you wish you had (or had not) done when you were my age? I'll graduate at the technologist level and I just signed up to become an associate member with C.E.T. , is this sufficient to live a comfortable lifestyle? Maybe something like a $1 million dollar house, couple Ferrari's maybe.... just kidding

A. -At least in the USA, the difference between a college and a university would be equal to the difference between a hotel and a motel, the difference bewteen six and half a dozen, and the difference between a politician and a criminal. -The first thing you need to do is make clear what the difference between a "college" and a "university" is within the context of your query. I think in most of the U.S., the terms are used interchangeably. The differences might be significant elsewhere. As near as I can tell, the normal distinction (again, here in the U.S.) is one of organization. A "university" has two or more "colleges" and the "colleges" have two or more "departments". While that might mean that the number and variety of degree options might generally be greater at a "university" and it might generally mean that a given student might have a broader range of elective courses they can take outside of their major, I don't know that it is reasonable to assume that the depth, breadth or quality of the education you can receive within your major is any better or any worse.
