Electrical Engineering schools in Canada and the U.S.

Edwards Finance > Electrical Engineering

Q. But my ranking would show (using my confidential methodology) how Canadian schools are better than most of the ones in the US. Canadian schools hard pressed for publicity would trumpet my rankings on their web site, which would only increase my book sales.

A. -Let me count.. There are some 90 or so campuses in Canada that could use one each in their library. Most students, with access to a photo copier can copy the entire Canadian content in the report for about 50 cents so you're not likely to make much money from them. I estimate your total proceeds from Canadian sales to be about $1,980 for each new revision. Gee, I hope you can break even. You'll have to have a new release every year to keep the revenues rolling in. Don't do what Gourman does. His revisions take about 3 years. BTW, for those who follow the history of the Gourman Report, when did the report first include Canadian schools? -What you actually do is sell them a subscription, cause you update the rankings on a monthly basis (in fact that's your gimmick... "we research and update our rankings monthly!"... the subscription is $500/year... that's 45k/year. Not bad to supplement your salary. ->You've mentioned working with graduates from many Canadian EE schools, but >no one from a school like Rice, Brown, RPI, Wisconsin-Madison, etc... A >friend of mine started in engineering at Dartmouth - and finished at >Queen's. He says there's no way that Lakehead and Windsor are anywhere >near as good as Dartmouth. >I can accept that Lakehead may have the 19th-best EE program in Canada, >but I think it's arrogant for us to think that this corresponds to being >in the top 50 in North America. Think about it - there are ten times as >many EE programs in the US and there's way more than 10 times the funding. >Gourman doesn't rate any Canadian EE programs in the next 50 in North >America and this makes his ratings even more suspect. My colleagues are from all over but about half of them are University of British Columbia graduates. Having said that, my experience over the last twenty years in industry has allowed me to develop certain impressions about graduates from various Canadian EE schools. Most of these schools are in Gourman's top 20, I might add. I don't think we are being arrogant with our interpretation of Gourman's work. It seems that Gourman's ranking of the undergraduate EE programs from Lakehead, Windsor, and other North American institutions, only indicates what can happen when the value of reputation is discounted and not measured in the rankings. Well-respected schools can end up looking worse than their reputation would normally suggest while lesser-known schools are recognized. The one interesting aspect about reputations and rankings in general is that reputations can become self-perpetuating. This is how I see it works. Tell enough people enough times that something is good for them and over time, they will come to believe it! That's how advertising works and to some extent, some university rankings. I'm not discounting the value of reputation and I know Dartmouth, RPI, Rice, Brown, and Wisconsin-Madison all have it in spades.
