What kinds of problems or challenges do electrical engineers usuallly find in their job? 4. Besides dealing with electrical engineers, what other fields of people do you usually work with? 5. Do you think the demand is going to change in the next decade? 7. What is the starting salary of an electrical engieer? ( in Canadian dolloars) 8. As an electrical engineer, i am sure you have some knowledge of other branches of electrical engineering, such as the developments of telecommunications, electronics, and computers? Can you briefly explian what do engineers do in these fields? 9. Among these three branches (telecommunications, electronics and computer engineering), which specialization has the greatest potential? 10. How does electrical engineering relate to computer engineering? 11. How do you update your knowledge continously? Do you take any courses? 12. A. > I am a high school student. Recently, i am doing a project about the career > of electrical engineering. i need some information from people working in > this career. Can anybody please help me with the following questions? > 1. What does an electrical engineer do? They're actually applied physcists that work in a specific field of physics - electricity and magnetism. > 2. What are the most interesting aspects of this career? New technology development. > 3. What kinds of problems or challenges do electrical engineers usuallly > find in their job? Trying to do alot with very little. IOW, economizing. > 4. Besides dealing with electrical engineers, what other fields of people > do you usually work with? I've worked with several - mechanical, chemical, manufacturing, accounting, ... > 5. What specific skills are important in order to be superior than other job > seekers? Good solid experience with good references is very difficult to compete against. > 6. Has the demand of electrical engineers increased or decreased in recent > years? I think it has increased. > Do you think the demand is going to change in the next > decade? I think it will continue to increase. > 7. What is the starting salary of an electrical engieer? ( in Canadian > dolloars) Depends entirely upon what you choose to do and your educational level and any previous experience from possibly former jobs or co-oping. > 8. As an electrical engineer, i am sure you have some knowledge of other > branches of electrical engineering, such as the developments of > telecommunications, electronics, and computers? Can you briefly explian > what do engineers do in these fields? The engineers that I've been associated with in these fields do "hardware design" in each of these fields. That means they specialize in designing circuits. > 9. Among these three branches (telecommunications, electronics and computer > engineering), which specialization has the greatest potential? Not really sure. IMO telco is big. > 10. How does electrical engineering relate to computer engineering? Through hardware design of computers. > 11. How do you update your knowledge continously? Do you take any courses? Yes. And read quite alot. > 12. How do engineers with master degrees superior than engineers with just > bachelor? Not necessarilly a given. Difficult to explain this one. I worked with a deigner of computer assisted servo systems (bottom up designer) who had no college at all. Very competent engineer. I tried to get him to go for a PE (he had plenty of experience) but he never did. > 13. How important is electrical engineering to the world? Very. Our current resources for energy (oil) are to run out soon. Altenative sources and methods of use have to be found. It's no longer a choice. This impacts those in charge of sourcing the power (our power people) as well as those using the power. > 14. Finally, can you give me some general advice? 1. Go to college. Get as far as you can be it a BS MS or Ph.D. without stopping. 2. Co-op as an associate engineer ideally in an area in which you want to work. 3. Decide very early in your career if you want management or design. 4. Constantly keep an open mind to new developments. 5. And never never underestimate the person on the shop floor or working at the bench. They just might surprise you.
