geometry of electric engineering

Edwards Finance > Electrical Engineering

Q. I'm doing a project on the geometry of electric engineering. I would appreciate all the help i could get.

A. There would be a lot of possible answers here: - the geometry of electic and magnetic fields in motors, sensors etc. - the geometry of mocrwaves in microwave ovens, ... Let me just give one I am currently working on (as a geometer in a collaboration with electrical engineers). You have a network of electrical sensors, measuring distances, directions to other sensors and beacons. What sets of distances and directions are enough to uniquely locate where each of the sensors is (given say fixed beacons). The simplest version is the '911 problem'. A person calls 911 on their cell phone and stops talking. - is there enough information in terms of reception at different receivers, strenght of reception (distances) etc. for the cell phone company to tell the emergencey crew exactly where to find the cell phone (and the person)? With one cell phone and 3-beacons this is related to SSS, SAS, ASA, etc.! It is, by the way, becoming a LEGAL requirement for cell phone companies to have this capacity.
