Hand drafting vs. CADEdwards Finance > CAD Drafting Q. We haven't had a discussion (argument) like this in a long time... As someone who will be entering college soon I wanted to get everyone's opinion on which they used more or like more. Or I guess anything that you wanted to share. :) Nowadays, freshman are taught hand drafting. Their sophomore, junior, and seniors they are expected to use CAD. I personally don't like this very much. I've come to love my scale rules. Despite being a young'n I have drafted close to 100 shows on good ol' vellum. Reading the logs on this subject it seems that most do not understand why hand drafting is taught before CAD. I think, along with other reasons, that people can appreciate using CAD more if they can understand how to hand draft. On the same boat, I believe that people should still have to learn CW before ham radio, and I still value the skill of being able to develop photographs in a darkroom. Welp, feel free to flame. A. -No flames here, I agree. Except for the fact that CAD is so much easier to revise and share with clients and other designers I would still prefer to hand draft my work. There's something about a beautifully hand drafted page that anticipates the magic it might represent. -I'm at the other end of the problem, here. while I agree that CAD is merely a tool, and it's better to learn the basiscs hand-drafting, my uni doesn't actually teach CAD at all...all I'm asking for is a courswe, even a half-credit course that'll teach me to use the software... I've played around with it, but I'm still pretty god-awful with it. I still do my plots on vellum... me an 'ol stubby the mechanical pencil
Other Questions: hand drafting as a pro - feasibility What do you think about a professional - architect or designer - that still hand draws all his projects? And, can one be financially successful (or efficient) today w/out CAD?
