Q. Are there any sites that offer evaluations on the numerous debt consolidation firms that have cropped up lately? They seem to all be the nearly the same. They all claim to work with numerous creditors, but never list who they are. Are there any listings of major creditors and their policies towards working with these firms?

A. From experience using such services for my clients I urge you to find the non-profit group in your area (if you are in USA). If one is not listed in your phone book call the local non-profit Family Service Agency or United Way for help in locating the service. They do the same as the commercial ones but do not profit from a consumer's difficulties. If they charge a fee it would be on a sliding scale based on your personal situation,
