Getting My Money Back From The Insurance CompanyQ. I just found out that I did not have any auto insurance from October 1997 to December 1997. For some reason, my coverage was terminated on October and I was not notified at all. Yes, I sent in my payment for October and November and I even have a canceled checks and bank statement to prove it. I did not bother to renew my policy b/c I sold my car in Dec. (Dec. was last months of my coverage.) I just purchased another car and went to an agent then he told me that I will have to put down 50% as preminum b/c of my lack of coverage for two months! What should I do? Is it possible to get money back from an insurance company? Somehow I am not sure just writing nice letter to them will produce a positive result. Is it possible for me to get my auto insurance history? Maybe if I show them publicly available record, they will act more proptly.... I live in New Jersey and the company is Allstate, BTW. Please advise and I thank for any info in advance. A. If you have the cancelled checks to prove your claim, here's what you should do. I went thru this with Allstate myself. Call your agent, or the local allstate office where you sent the checks. Tell them the story, and let them respond. They will say - send us copies of the cancelled checks. Here's where it gets dicey. Tell them no - you will not send them copies of the cancelled checks. Tell them to do their own homework. You will go round and round for awhile on this, but stick to your guns. Finally, they will tell you that without copies of the cancelled checks, there's nothing they can do. Ask them for the name, adress and phone number of the CEO in Chicago, Illinois. If you can't get anything else, the phone number is most important (you can get the phone number of Corporate from information in Illinois anyway). Call Chicago - Allstate's corporate office, and ask to speak with the CEO. Tell the CEOs secretary or admin. asst your story. Sit back and wait. Probsably, within 48 hours, without your having to do anything else, the problem will get resolved. When all is resolved, then find another insurer, and cancel your allstate policy. I represent the Insurance Information Institute, a nonprofit organization committed to educating consumers about what insurance is and how it works. The more important thing to consider is the two months without coverage. You could be fined by the Motor Vehicle Bureau for driving without insurance. The correct thing to do is to get the coverage reinstated by Allstate. Suggest that you contact Allstate's Home office. Dial Ms. Mary Horstman (or anybody in her dept) at 847-402-5970. She is in the Communications dept and can help you. Have your policy number handy along with the name and phone number of your Allstate agent. She will probably ask you to FAX the cancelled checks and other information to her. That was my suggestion - to do whatever it takes to get the job done. I did, and a problem that the local Allstate office refused to fix for 2 months, got fixed in less than 48 hours at the CEO level, without any further intervention on my part. I don't go to the CEO unless I can't get anywhere with the local office.
