Cordless phone problemQ. I'm having a hard time finding a cordless phone that works properly in my house. I have a 25 channel Panasonic that works great but the battery won't stay charged. I've tried about every 900 mhz and 2.4 Giga phone (Panasonic, Uniden, Sony, Toshiba, etc.) and they all have interference in my house! My microwave totally distorts any 900 or higher phone (even though the base is in the far end of the house) and there must be something else either in my house or around it that does the same thing at random times. Is there any way to find out what is causing this problem? I would really like to have a cordless phone that I can use! I hope someone can help me because this is driving me crazy!!!! A. All consumer cordless phones are limited in power, and are sensitive to pickup electrical interferance. Microwave ovens work at 2.5 gHz, and will interfer with many of the higher frequency phones. I found that many of the newer microwave ovens on the market are better shielded against RF radiation emission, and will interfer less. Also the cordless phone frequency allocation is restricted, and if there are many of them around your area, then they start interfering with each other. When using a cordless phone, this is one of the things you must put up with. You should pick a phone model that you can tolerate the most. The ultimate answer is a good PCS digital cell phone. These use pure digital control and processing. They are a lot more powerful than your cordless phone, and are much less sensitive to pickup interference. This is the way I solved my cordless phone problem. I forward my home phone calls to the cell phone when I want to take my calls on it. I found it to also be handy because it is also a second line where people can find me when I am needed. If you look at the cost of purchasing a good cordless phone, and weigh it against the cost of a cell phone where you don't have to put down much onto it, the cost over the first year ballances out. Your cordless phone will only last you a few years, and then must be changed again. With many plans, you can get a new cell phone every two years with very little down... Hmm...Usually it's the 49MHz phones that get screwed up - you're the opposite. What type of "interference" are you hearing? Static? Squeels? Buzzing? Have you replaced the battery in the "25 channel Panasonic" that works well for you? Do you live near a mountain or tall building (within a mile)? Most likely you have a pager/cellphone tower very close (hidden on top of tall buildings is very common). Most likely all the "trash" from the various high power 800MHz/900MHz/1.9GHz services are "messing" with your phone. Also note that there are a lot of low power consumer TV/Video "transmitters" operating on 900MHz and 2.4GHz ("Rabbits"). Most likely someone near by has one of these and is screwing up both 900MHz and 2.4GHz. Wireless LAN's also use these frequencies. 900MHz and 2.4GHz are getting very crowded. The cheap "consumer" phones (Sony, Uniden, Panasonic, etc) may not be able to handle all the interference. You might wish to try "commercial" cordless phone from Nortel, Seimens and others. They are designed for harsh environments. Hello Direct (http://www.hellodirect.com), and other business phone resellers should have a wide selection. If they have liberal return policies, give them a try! You may want to try one of the "Business" phones, or figure out why your good Panasonic is draining it's battery. Maybe they just need to be replaced.
