Mechanical/Construction Engineering QuestionEdwards Finance > General Engineering Q. Is there any type of reference that would give you an estimate of the load a certain size screw can sustain in standard pine construction grade lumber? I placed a 3/8 inch eyebolt into the end of a flat 2/4 about 2 & 1/2 to 3 inches. It's holding the load fine, but I'm curious to know if I'm close to the limit for this configuration. A. -I don't know how big your load is, but loading parallel to the grain is in the weak direction. It is relatively easy to shear the "threads" along the grain. -The demand on your system is probably low. Are you going into end grain or side grain? Marks Mechanical Engineering Handbook shows how to calc the capacity. Also the NDS (National Design Specification) gives very conservative values for screws & lags.
