Q. is it worth doing Computer Science/Computer Systems Engineering? i'm in yr12 next year and is just curious.

A. The maths gets a bit heavy at times (doing things like fourier transforms (basically integration), laplace transforms, solving differential equations, boundary value problems etc... but the rest is rather cool As stated, I'm going to focus on Computer system engineering, rather than communication or electronic. THis does not mean I don't get to do network based stuff - the core communications subjects focus mainly on antennas, effects of coaxial cable on signals ect (reflections, propagation delays) and a whole heap of stuff I didn't really like. The straight computer science you do stuff like java, C, C++, although u do jump around a lot (one semester you'll do C++, then java, then C, then back to C++ etc), as well as doing things like analysing and breaking down problems, theories behind object oriented programming, databases (SQL etc). For computer systems engineering, you focus on digital systems - using assembly, memory accessing / arcitecture, cpu structure, issues with cache, advantages/disadvantages of higher clock speeds, performance, as well as the more real world aspects of interfacing, design constraints, setup delays... etc. Common to all engineering subjects is design, in which u do bullshit like business management (questions like who chairs meetings, what tax rate is on industrial businesses etc), but the labs you do cool stuff like design your own products, make your own pcb's etc (I did an integrated car monitor, measures temp, speed, rpm and displays it all on an LCD) These are just the core subjects, you get to start specialising 4th year (what I'm up to next year) - things like networking, Linux (yes we have a course, very basic, but good if you know jack about unixes in general), and more stuff, but the slack ass department head hasn't finalised our choices yet, so we have nfi what we can choose from Be warned - with the double degree you usually average about 24 contact hours a week - some semesters more, some less. exams can get a bit messy (they all get bunched up I found, although this year they're nice and spread out), and you won't get a day off as RMIT chooses to do double degree timetables last, and you get some nasty 3 or 4 hours gaps inbetween lectures etc (perfect for movies, but this gets expensive after a while As well as that, administration sucks, so get to know your fellow DD'ers well - we had to organise 2 maths subjects this year which were 'left off' the curriculum, but we need to pass - our course leader was no help at all, and we ended up organising it ourselves.
