Learning Computer Science with Pascal

Edwards Finance > Computer Engineering

Q. I am about to purchase Delphi. In addition to learning programming with Delphi, I would like to increase my understanding and knowledge of Computer Science. From what I understand Pascal is a common language for learning programming and computer science. The two books on computer science I have available at the library were published in 1990 and I don't even know that they are even good books. In fact in these two books hard disks aren't even mentioned as storage devices. Do those of you which are better studied and/or educated have any suggestions for current computer science/engineering texts which use Pascal as the learning language. My goal here is not so much in the learning of Pascal but learning computer science/engineering. Things like memory, stacks, heaps (dynamic, static, global, etc), registers and other such items. Any comments, suggestions appreciated.

A. -Just jump in and start learning. Delphi is as good as any other starting point. How you start is less important than just getting started. The books Delphi 2 for Dummies, by Rubenking and Teach Yourself Delphi 2 in 21 days were what I started with. You can download a trial edition of Delphi 2 from Borland's web site. This trial edition will work for 30 days, and is a good inexpensive starting point. If your interest is programming for the Windows environment, the two best starting languages is either Delphi or Visual Basic. -You may be interested to know that the Pascal language was invented at the university of Zurich (Switzerland) by N. Wirth, specifically to teach good programming habits. Pascal was made very popular with the introduction of the Borland Turbo Pascal (a US company founded by a French man). Borland has introduced many new features in the Pascal language, and today's powerful Object Oriented Pascal found in Delphi still retain the original philosophy of N. Wirth.
