Q. I have just become head of Operations TOO. I have to create job description for our shop. I have not done computer operator job description is years. I have to create description of computer operator trainee and full operator. I was hoping that someone would have (and share) an old copy that I could use to start from?

A. Computer Operator I Operates and monitors computer equipment. Performs routine tasks to maintain computer equipment and their peripherals. Loads peripheral equipment such as tapes and printer paper for operating runs. Observes peripheral equipment and error messages displayed on monitor of terminal to detect faulty output or machine stoppage. May require an associate's degree or its equivalent and 0-3 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a project leader or manager. Computer Operator II Operates and monitors computer equipment. Performs routine tasks to maintain computer equipment and their peripherals. Loads peripheral equipment such as tapes and printer paper for operating runs. Observes peripheral equipment and error messages displayed on monitor of terminal to detect faulty output or machine stoppage. May require an associate's degree or its equivalent and 2-5 years of experience as a computer operator. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision; typically reports to a project leader or manager. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Computer Operator III Operates and monitors computer equipment. Performs routine tasks to maintain computer equipment and their peripherals. Loads peripheral equipment such as tapes and printer paper for operating runs. Observes peripheral equipment and error messages displayed on monitor of terminal to detect faulty output or machine stoppage. May require an associate's degree or its equivalent and at least 5 years of experience as a computer operator. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks. May lead and direct the work of others. May report directly to an project lead or manager. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Computer Operations Supervisor Administers computer operations department policies and procedures. Supports and administers data retention/recovery and production job schedule environments. Supervises employees assigned to a particular shift. Performs continuous analysis of production jobs, backup processes, system monitors and server availability and provides solutions working with all groups impacted. May require an associate's degree in a related area and at least 5 years of experience in the field. Generally, supervises a group of computer operators. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Typically reports to a manager. Computer Operations Manager Plans, directs, and manages the daily operations of a computer operations department. Establishes department policies and procedures. May require an associate's degree in a related area and at least 8 years of experience in the field. Generally manages a group of computer operators. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Typically reports to a senior manager.
