Finance Q&A

Any computer engineers out there?

Edwards Finance > Computer Engineering

Q. I am a freshman in college and currently taking College Algebra. My professor said that she is tired of hearing from her students, "When are we ever gonna use this stuff?" So now she is making us do a project about how we will use Algebra and other math in our future profession. Now for the reason of this post. Part of the project is that I have to interview a computer engineer by Thursday. If you are one or know of one please mail me. All I have to know is what kind of company you work for and how you use math in your work. I would really appreciate your help.

A. Here's the poop you're looking for. Electricity, which makes computers possible is ALL math. Mathematical formulae are the basis of our understanding of how to use electricity to do our bidding and send dirty pictures over the net. The components of a computer all have physical properties that are translated into mathematical values for the purpose of using electricity to represent ones and zeroes (Base 1 numbers) for the purpose of digital logic. Ones and zeros are then used to represent hexidecimal (Base 16 numbers) to represent Bits and Bytes of information that is used to form text documents, web pages, flight simulator games and pictures of your favorite porn star on internet newsgroups. Here's the point of this english paper. Algebra, which has limited use outside of engineering, science, statistics and accounting, is a building block of abstract concepts that a student must learn to grasp in order to train his or her mind to grasp bigger and better concepts that will eventually teach you a skill that will pay for your ex-wife's alimony and child-support.
