Any Hot Computer Engineering subject for research

Q. I am looking for hot research subject for Master or doctoral degree, mainly computer related.

A. -The difference between academic and marketplace succes. E.g. why are functional or real OO languages that seem in most ways superior used so little, and are languages like VB so popular? Is the perceived superiority false? -Hot computer engineering areas that are "mainly computer related"? If you mean computer science, I can suggest a few hot areas, IMO: - Security (networking, communications, operating systems) - Privacy (communications, and all places through which info passes) - Quality of service, reliability (esp networking) - Performance optimization (esp networking, w/ benchmarking & analysis) - Intelligent assistants (info retrieval, automatic search) - Mechanisms for superscalar process execution (multithreading, etc) - Embeddable computers (wearable, in appliances, networking them) - Databases (as always) I also think that gaming technologies will find application in a variety of areas in the near future (as active graphics enter the mainstream). I suspect that will be manifested in computer-based instruction, active user interfaces, virtual environments, and initial forays into atavars, like Microsoft Bob However, if by "hot" you mean "marketable", I would drop the AI-ish stuff and gaming. Universities appear to be down on AI, and downright hostile to gaming (if it's fun, a subject shouldn't be taken seriously). From what I've seen, the same things that are hot in the commercial sector are hot in academia (since an increasing portion of academic funding appears to be coming from industry). Consider networking and databases -- IMO, boring, but much in demand for the foreseeable future.
