Finance Q&A

Interested in Engineering and CIS

Edwards Finance > Computer Engineering

Q. I am going to college for either a CIS or Computer Engineering degree. I was hoping that somone could provide me some helpful suggestions on what I should do to be successful in my career choice.

A. - you'll have to define CIS and Computer Engineering. I'm not sure what CIS stands for and "Computer" is not a type of Engineering. There is Computer Science which deals with how computers work, programming, algorithms, etc, etc. And there is the engineering involved in building a computer. Of course... that's generally electrical engineering with a tilt towards what is required to make a computer work. They are two widely different fields. The coursework required for each is widely divergent. If you want to be an engineer... generally you need to be pretty good at math and science. If you want to be a "Computer Scientist"... math and science are also nice to be good at but... I'd guess that math and logical reasoning are probably more important. Obviously, there is a crossover in the basic subject areas. Think about what you are good at and what excites you. Then... go for the field that wets your whistle the most. -Actually, there is such a thing as a Computer Engineering (B.S.) degree, at least in Texas, probably elsewhere too. This degree was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in 1999 and is being reviewed for accreditation. I've seen this degree mentioned on other discussion boards and it is often abbreviated C.E. so it's easy to see how this will become a source of confusion .
