difference in computer/electrical engineering

Edwards Finance > Computer Engineering

Q. What is the difference in the job capacities of these positions? I am a second year computer engineering student. I think I want to get into the design phase/architecture of the computers. Maybe write code to do some low level interfacing (my favorite course so far has been an assembly language course, and my most interesting course has been circuit analysis (though this one has defintely been my hardest!). I am kinda confused about what major to take, and what advantages/disadvantages associated with these majors.

A. I'd suggest that you take a look at the course structure. From my persective, computer engineering requires a fundamental knowledge of the basics of electrical engineering (electronics) and computer science. From the EE side: 1. DC and AC circuit analysis. 2. Basic electronics. 3. Digital logic design. 4. Computer architecture. From the CS/Math side: 1. Data structures. 2. Algorithm design. 3. Programming languages, practices, and debugging. 4. Operating system architectures. If your program lacks any of these essentials, you'll likely find it difficult to function in the capacity of a computer engineer. Avoid programs stressing compiler and/or operating system design, since there isn't a great market demand or need for such expertise, at least in computer engineering. Of course, both opinions and definitions vary. These are simply mine, resulting from 30+ years of work in the field. The opinions of your TA, with no work experience in the field, will likely be quite different.
