Finance Q&A

college majors?

Edwards Finance > Computer Engineering

Q. I am entering college this fall of 2000 currently majoring in computer engineering. With everything going on at defcon, I went to their site, defcon.org, and read a list of people who will be speaking there. They include electrical engineers as well as many computer scientists. My question is, why are there no computer engineers there? If you have ever checked out any job sites there are no jobs for them. I am deeply interested in artificial intelligence and neural networking and the classes I will be taking for computer engineering appear to be perfect for those subject areas. I really don't know if I am doing the right thing, should I go for computer science or computer engineering?

A. To build a winning team, I always go for the best athlete, regardless of what position they played in college. I have hired an EE's, CE's, CS's, physicists, chemists, ME's, and software engineers. I look for people with enthusiasm and who have ideas about the subject. Since I am in the business of computer controlled hardware, I am biased toward those with an engineering discipline, but only slightly. As far as computer science vs computer engineering I prefer computer engineering because they have at least talked about the problems of large software (its about standards, documentation, communication, and team work and not about being brilliant).
