Software-Computer Engineering Career Question.Edwards Finance > Computer Engineering Q. I'm a college student interested in both software and computer enginnering. I know what I would like to be doing after college but I don't know if my college major should move toward software engineering or computer enginnering. What I'm saying is that I don't know which major will cater toward my career goals. I'm interested in developing 3D applications such as 3DStudio, MatheMatica, and AutoCad. However, I'm interested in working with technology that you see on shows like Beyond 2000, NextStep for instance hooking up a golf player to electrodes and then ploting the real-time (3D) input on the computer to analyse the swing. I've always been fascinated with low-level programming, graphics as well as electronics. Does the software engineer deal with writing the code for real-time electronic input devices or does the computer engineer do this? Could someone in the field clarify exactly to what extent that both software and computer engineers work with writing code and working with electronics? A. There is a lot of cross over between the computer and software engineer. You will have a better background IMHO with the computer engineering degree. The more exposure you have to hardware the better. This is essential if you want to be at the cutting edge or working with new product development. It is much easier to learn a new software language than it is to develop understanding of hardware. I know of some great programmers who just don't have the background to work in product development and a lot of programming is done here.
Other Questions: Computer/Electrical Engineering I am trying to decide what major I want based upon what I want to do for the rest of my life. I believe I want to design chips, boards, i/o, etc. Thus I think I need to be a Computer Engineer, yet some companies look for Electrical Engineers to... Do any of you who inhabit this newsgroup work in the field of computer science--particularly are there any females, but are there _any ADDers_ who are computer scientists?
