Computer/Electrical EngineeringEdwards Finance > Computer Engineering Q. I am trying to decide what major I want based upon what I want to do for the rest of my life. I believe I want to design chips, boards, i/o, etc. Thus I think I need to be a Computer Engineer, yet some companies look for Electrical Engineers to do that work. Does anyone know what industry actualy looks for for that? Also, I hear consulting mentioned a lot for people who graduate with an EE or CE degree. What exactly is it? A. -Probably electrical. I had a friend in college who had a problem with this; he wanted to design embedded systems but the EE classes got heavily into analog circuits, filters and stuff and the CE classes didn't teach any hardware at all. But if you are going for pure hardware design, you need the EE degree. Consulting is like, you contract with one employer for x amount of dollars (or x dollars an hour) for a certain period and do a project; then you find another employer and contract with him for a while, and so on. -They'll be thrilled to death to get a resume for a digital design position from somebody with a computer engineer major -- don't worry that the ad just says "Electrical Engineer". My BS is in Computer Engineering (Iowa State '83). At ISU, CprE was part of the EE department -- I believe the name of the department has since been changed to ECE (Electrical and Computer Engineering). At ISU, CprE is basically a EE degree with no motors, not as much fields, a bit less analog, more computer science, and more digital. You end up in almost the same spot (minus a couple computer science classes) with a EE degree where you pick digital classes for all your electives. >Does anyone know what industry actualy looks for for that? >Also, I hear consulting mentioned a lot for people who graduate >with an EE or CE degree. What exactly is it? Thanks. If you want to do digital design, especially microprocessor based stuff, go with CprE. If it turns out you don't like the computer science stuff, you should be able to switch to EE with a digital emphasis without loosing much ground -- the curricula probably overlap by about 90%. Even if you think you want to do hardware design exclusively, you'll probably need some software skills when it comes to troubleshooting your projects -- even if your code never gets shipped with the product, you'll prbably end up needing to write a little bit of code to make it do somthing while you poke at it with a 'scope probe.
Other Questions: what is the differences between computer science and computer engineering ?
