Cisco Systems Voip?Q. Is it me or is VOIP WAY over-hyped and WAY mis understood. It seems to be a big buzz word and frankly I don't see why. For networking remote phones and sites yes..in house..why? A. You can do all that now with a regular PBX. As for half the cable I would dispute that. On the contrary systems like Cisco are WAY expensive give you about half the features of a modern PBX and 1/4 the reliability. There is alot to be said to have analog capability off a PBX. You can ride fiber on a PBX..most easily and use QSIG protocol for VOIP networking wherever. All the "advantages" you suggest are meager and costly. Heck, even the switches used on Cisco systems are proprietary and expensive as all get out. Maybe I just don't see it. A PBX can talk to another PBX over the same wiring infrastructure that's already in place for data networking? Sounds like VoIP, or something really close, to me. Then please give a basis for disputing it. With a full VoIP system, you have your data network, and that's it. Sure...VoIP systems aren't as mature as PBX...yet. Feature counts continue to go up, but fortunately, I don't choose systems based on feature counts, but on whether they have the specific features I need. Reliability is a matter of how to set up your systems. A VoIP system can be fully decentralized which can result in *greater* reliability. It does take someone that knows what they're doing to do it, but then, that's the same with a traditional PBX as well. VoIP gear can gateway to analog lines just fine. Eh? Cisco switches proprietary? You mean like ethernet switches? They may have some proprietary features, but you certainly don't have to use them. Otherwise, they're pretty darn standards compliant. Also, voice-capable routers are just not all that expensive. Perhaps willfully? (Not trying to take a shot at you, but given the business you're in, I could believe that you'd have some sort of "block" on being able to believe that something that is going to significantly change your business as being worth all the hype). Now...let me throw out some disclaimers here. 1) VoIP is a technology that is still very young. Feature sets are not as complete as PBX's, that's for sure. That will change over time though. 2) It takes knowledge of networking to be able to do VoIP well, because you have to have a well-run and reliable network as a base on which to run VoIP if you want it to be reliable. You can't just slap-dash a network together to run it on, unless you're dealing with a very small scale. 3) VoIP technology is probably not ready for prime time in every case, depending on your needs though, it can be a *huge* cost savings and simplification. It can also enable dramatic new capabilities that are typically doable with PBX's, but not easily or inexpensively.
