Why does cell phone service cost more than wired?Q. I really wanted another dedicated line for my computer, with no frills. What I found out was that it would cost almost $40 a month, with NONE of the services I already had on the other line. My regular line, with the "Complete Choice" plan, is around $55 a month. A. Actually it's a strong stomach that allows me to stand among the surrounding groveling at the alter of useless technological gadgetry and redundancy, regardless of all the idiot marketing ploys. Cell phone ubiquity is just more evidence that there continues to be no shortage of suckers born every minute (note how popular cells are among the juvenile--known suckers. It's like taking candy from babies). But if technological obeisance blows up your skirt, please feel free to throw away as much of your own money on it as you like. It costs what it costs. For me, cell phone service costs about the same as my residential phone line. My total phone bill from Verizon (both residential and cellular service) is $65 a month. My cell phone plan (with nationwide service) is almost exactly half of that. Come September when my Verizon cell phone plan expires, I plan to cancel my residential and cell phone plans. My employer now supplies me with a cell phone so I do not need my own cell phone any longer. I also plan to replace my residential line with a Vontage voice over IP line. A friend did this recently and he's thrilled with the service, and he pays only $15 a month for his phone with 500 minutes a month anywhere. Cell phone companies also have to go through a lot of administrative red tape to build a cell phone tower. They also pay huge monthly rental fees on many of their cell towers. I think I use my cell phone more than the landline. I cant use my landline to call some of my family because its considered a long distance call and they live 35-45 miles away....The rest of our family live out of state, still long distance. I have considered getting rid of the landline but still a bit hesitant. We use the fax machine a lot.
