Finance Q&A

cell phone receive only ??

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. Can I leave my cell phone on but not answer it in flight. My phone says who called so I can later call them back on the ground???? I HAVE been turning it off before flying.

A. To be legal, no. Your cell phone transmits when the power is on. That's how it can tell you what the signal strength is, that's also how it rings in the first place. It knows where you are at all times the phone is on. I leave mine on all the time and use it in flight. I rarely fly above 1000-1500 AGL so I've never had a problem. As previous, it is not a good idea. Your phone is communicating with ground continually, which both increases the chances that you are bridging cells, and is also blinking your phone number in red lights as a voilator. The cell phone companies have a big advantage over you. They can reprogram the "switch" at the cell site, and do so regularly. As you might have heard, they are installing software that tries to more accurately track a users' wherebouts. The fact, often repeated here, that cell phones in air sometimes go uncharged is based on the "minimum connect time", ie., if your cell phone is not connected long enough, the call may be disregarded. This is, however, a purely software related issue. The cell site knows who you are (you number) or it would not place an outbound call. The other thing that is detectable is "cell bridging", which is the appearance of your cellphone on two different cell sites. Each of the cell switches is communicating back to a central database server that determines if you are a valid caller, and billing, etc. The central site can certainly detect if you are bridging. In fact, bridging is a common and normal occurance, even with cars or standing on the street. If you are standing between two cells (equadistant) you are going to bridge them. The system decides what cell you are on, and the other (inactive) cell just ignores you. However, it must mark that frequency as "dirty" as long as you are being received on it. In a normal world, you will drive further, stop jamming the dirty frequency and free it up for another call.
