New Operating System ?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. Anyone wanting to work on development of a new operating system

A. This is a project which I have been dreaming up for the last year or so. I have not written any code, nor have I broken down this vast undertaking into manageable pieces yet. I have merely began my small, voluntary movement of coders and designers toward a new operating system which addresses the issue of popular distributions of Linux and windows. We all know that Windows is an inferior operating system. Linux is an excellent operating system if you enjoy 3am nites paired with a can of coke and a half empty box of pizza. Let's face it, my dad will never be able to setup, install & manage a Linux box (you'll have to trust me on that one). He has a hard enough time with Windows 98. Why can't we merge the ease of Windows (or Mac) and the power of Linux into a new operating system. If nothing else, it's a pet project for those that have the time. I am the project founder although I will be the first to admit that I know very little about operating system design. I will not pretend to be something that I'm clearly now. I am a third year computer science student at Wilfred Laurier University. I have merely come up with the idea, that's all I can claim. Should someone believe in my project, and have more experience than I do, I will release the reigns of control onto him/her. I was asked they I wouldn't just work on Linux. I am sure that when you first started to learn Linux you spent many nites pulling your hair out over why this program would compile, why your make files weren't working, why your window manager wouldn't open in the proper res. These are not easy things to figure out for some people, especially for somebody that has very little computer experience. Linux is great, and I fully believe in it. However, it lacks the easy of use that other popular operating systems have. To my knowledge, there are not projects currently under way which are attempting to address the major problems with "ease of use". GNOME and KDE are starts, but they merely abstract the problems of the underlying OS (somewhat like DOS and Win 3). My project hasn't even suggested that we do away with the Linux kernel etc. It's all up for discussion. My ideas are posed on my webpage, you can check them out. As for the comment about my open source knowledge. I have been following the open source model for a few years now. I have wrote papers on it (for university) and I have read some of the below mentioned articles. I believe that open source works, and that it is the future in any non-commercial development projects. It is also my understanding that Torvalds developed his kernal as a pet project for himself (if I remember what I read correctly). Therefore, he obviously didn't release it until he had decided that it was worth releasing. I have never claimed that I had something to release. What I claimed is that I have decided to begin the process of developing a new operating system and that anyone who was interested was welcome to pursue the idea with me. What I have created is a forum for people who feel the way I do about linux and windows. I posted in this news group (and others, as I now regret) because I feel that Linux is a jumping off platform for further efforts. "In what way are you necessary to this movement?" I'm not! I'm just a guy who enjoys programming, has an interested in operating system programming and decided to try and find people who have the same interests. I feel this question is an ad hominem attack and really doesn't deserve to be answered. But, "There is a lot to be said about clarity."
