working on a CAD/DraftingEdwards Finance > CAD Drafting Q. I have a real interest in the Drafting field. I have been relearning the drafting I knew in High School, working on a CAD/Drafting math workbook, doing some designing and reading all that I can about drafting. Question is: Is to possible to enter the field at 41? Any feedback on this would be appreciated! A. -I bought AutoCAD to "play" with at 40...now 48 and make a pretty good living with it. What's your background? AutoCAD's nothing more than a tool to communicate what you already know to those that need that knowledge on paper. Also, IMHO there's only one way to learn AutoCAD. Get on the keyboard and start pounding away -AutoCAD is a hammer, a saw, in other words, a tool to get the job done. Not only do you have to know how to use the tool, you have to know how to use that tool to build something. At age 41, what kind of background do you have? From my own experience as an electrician, after hurting my back and needing to get into something like cad, I was able to draw upon that experience to "relate" to what I was drafting. Having vainly thought for years that I could design a better set of electrical plans than I had used to wire projects with didn't hurt either. -A couple of quick questions: do you enjoy drafting (manually or otherwise)? Are you good at it? If not, are you determined to learn? If you answered YES to at least two of the three questions above, then consider the following hypothetical situation. Assume that to take the required tech school classes and get your associates degree will take two years. You are 41 now, and will be 43 in two years. Question: How old will you be in two years if you don't pursue your goal(dream)? If you really want this, then GO FOR IT!! In my years of teaching AutoCAD, my experience has show that drive and determination play a very big part in how effective a future CAD operator will be. (Thats why they still call what I do TEACHing, and what you need to do LEARNing!)
Other Questions: I have been told that I should be AutoCAD proficient in order to make it easy to get my first job. However, I didn't spend all that money and years at college to get my BSCE in order to become a CAD drafter. I don't mind using CAD, but I want t...
