Finance Q&A

Business White Pages. Interesting tax thing?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. On another topic, Rae, do you find your yellow pages ad useful? I think of getting one from time to time, but I am such a small concern (there is now myself and two subcontractors) that I'm afraid I'll get calls for jobs that are too large for me, then spend my days trying to find other decent services for them. Do you get many calls for help that you can't do?

A. This ad is a basic oneliner that comes with having a business line. I would not pay for yellow pages ads. I get a few calls but can't say I've done much business this way, and there aren't that many services listed under transcription, either (probably not even a dozen). Having seen my "entrepreneur" BIL sucked into a huge ad for his tiny company then not being able to pay, and having done some work for some collection lawyers, I see they get people in over their heads. I don't know how many collection cases I saw where they Yellow Pages settle for way less than the amount due. No wonder ads are so expensive. I don't think most people, at least around here, pick a service this way. Sometimes it is for nonmedical or multiple-person tapes, which I am not interested in. I just say I am not looking for more work or I don't do that type, and might give them the name of a friendly competitor who also has passed some work my way. So is this a listing in the white pages under Business? Or do you get a one-liner in the Yellow Pages for having a business line? Here, if you have a business line, I believe you get the one line in the business white pages for no extra charge. I have a listing in the business section of white pages and a one line in Yellow Pages at no charge because it is a business line. Those not having a business line would not get it. Business line costs more. one-liner in the Yellow Pages for having a business line? Here, if you have a business line, I believe you get the one line in the business white pages for no extra charge. I really had no choice. One time I ran an ad in local news type mag for resumes. Got one call (which I now believe was a ruse). I later noted I was being charged business line rate. I made a fuss. We are on a small two-town phone company. At the time a residential line was maybe 4something and business 6something. The phone company actually perused this and had perhaps had called me asking if I wanted business line. I apparently said no. I was PISSED. One ad and they charged business rates. I took a complaint to the Public Utilities Commision and won
