IP Business Telephones ?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. Is anyone out there using an IP business telephone? I have been looking at Mitel, Siemens, 3Com, Selsius, and Pingtel. Any comments on ease of use or problem areas? Also, being in a hardware world, if you know the chipsets used in any of these phones.

A. We have been looking at the Cisco system. But we'll have to replace all our 3Com hubs and switches with something that supports QoS over IP. Obviously they're custom, and even if not, they're proprietary and obviously not for general consumption. Most if not all of the feature you list are available in Business Telephones. I wouldn't disregard them so quickly. In order to use a software solution you need to have hardware. In your case, that hardware would probably be one of three things. A modem+telephone, which has many limitations. A telephony card like that from Mediaphonics, which can be expensive. A business telephone that supports CTI, of which price and features vary. If it makes you happier, you can say "CTI Telephone" instead of "Business Telephone". Microsoft Phone was sold mainly as SOHO Business Telephone. Voice commands is a software issue, not a hardware issue. Their hardware may still be useful. I do not know of any other product offhand that does voice commands. Not that they doesn't exist, but that if that is a definite requirement then you should be looking for that first before all else, because it is the largest limitation. That being said, you may be able to integrate with Dragon Naturally Speaking or other voice recognition program.
