Business Telephone Systems ?Q. I was wondering if someone can give me some information, before I start looking for a solution so that I dont get missled by any sales people. 1. When a business has multiple telephone lines, how do they come into their office? I assume if they have 4 incoming lines BT (or whoever) dont physically run 4 sets of wires, or do they? 2. Telephone systems for a small office, is it usual for a small business to buy a telephone switch exchange for their office, or is it more likely rented? What kind of prices get paid for these things, to buy or to rent? A. For analogue lines then yes, 4 lines will be 8 wires or 4 pairs (unless Dacsed etc), for ISDN2 BRI then 4 lines/channels will be on 4 wires or 2 pairs - for ISDN30 PRI (minimum of 8 channels in UK on BT) could be on fibre or copper with 1/2/3 pairs etc according to distance. I think most customers do purchase their systems, but there are quite a few dealers offering leasing options. The price is dependant on many factors including model/make, equipped size/expandable size, features/facilities available and number of phones included (by this I mean System featurephones). For a 4 line system - a rough guide would be around a grand, but this is very rough as depends on whether analogue or ISDN, number of extensions and featurephones + the systems maximum expansion possibilities and other possible features. Many people do pay a lot more for more sophisticated kit of which they barely use 10% of. Wiring/installaton charges as well of course if the premises is not already pre-wired. Many will rent/lease as leasing payments may be offset against tax more efficiently than asset purchase payments, and leasing will include maintenance. With larger systems, whether the hardware is rented or purchased, there can be ongoing software licenses to rent. As businesses are usually rather reticent to have their phone system ripped out they may be paying more than they should for older systems on contract. There is usually a big selection of slightly obsolete small systems on Ebay going for surprisingly little cost. BT Norstar Compact/Compact Plus (6 line 16 extension) systems including some phones have sold recently for ?50--350.
