Telephone etiquette ?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. My old Audiovox cell "had" a nice missed call feature- it just had an led on top that blinked. The display held that number. One tick and I could dial the # back. Very useful for me, when I work the phone is somewhere it won't get destroyed. The Nokia has to be picked up and peered into as well.

A. The reason why store clerks and car rental clerks will leave a customer at the counter waiting to answer the phone is because they are often receiving phone calls from other branches, as well as customers. If customers start complaining about not being able to reach the company by phone, management will look into the problem, and this means speaking to the people at the offending location. If other branches complain to management that they cannot reach the rental/store location by phone, then management will *quickly* look into the problem. They want to see if the staff is goofing off and should be replaced. If the situation is just too few people for too many tasks then management will usually tell the staff to answer phone calls even if it means leaving a counter customer waiting. Counter clerks will comply not because they want to maximize sales, but because they don't want their location under management scrutiny again. Additionally, in the retail business store owners will often have occasion to call their store, and if the phone is not answered for any reason then the store clerks are going to hear about it. How about my mother who cnnot make a phone call without sitting down with something to eat and then inists on talk to you with food in her mouth while she is chewing. This usaully happens only when she initiates the call, which is somehow worse, I think. And yes, I do hang up on people that I cannot understand on the phone. I also refuse to listen to phone calls made to me with "special recorded messages". Here's another one, which has happened twice this week. If I'm on the goddam phone when you walk in my office and I don't beg off right away, that probably means the call is important. Even if it's not, DO NOT try and interrupt me. If I look at you and nod, it means I've acknowledged you and will get back to you when I'm off the goddam phone.
