CD ROM bus. phone directories ?Q. I am in the process of purchasing a CD ROM business phone directory and would appreciate any input on the various CD's available. I have read about Select Phone and PhoneDisc but except for price, they seem very similar. I am only interested in the business listings so the residential capibilities are not that important. If you have experience with CD business directories your recommendations would be very helpful. I recommended a CD to a friend, who bought it and began to use it. Amazingly, the CD installed software onto the PC, which contained a counter, which would only allow 5000 detailed lookups. ??? Of course, the CD could be reinstalled. ??? What were the programmers thinking when they made the counter? A. PhoneDisc used to have this *FEATURE*, but now permits unlimited downloads. I believe this was a limitation placed on them by their database provider, not by the programming staff! I find these tools semi-useful - but it's at least a quarter old when released, so you cannot count on it for small business phone numbers. I like the 800 number CD best - it save me lots of money! And **NEVER**, **NEVER** rely on the info these contain as the basis for a direct mail campaign! From my experiences, the CD is outdated by anywhere from 6-12 months the day it is available for sale. On the plus side, sometimes the CD will have telephone information added to it from secondary sources such as subscription memberships. For that reason, I will only use online services although they are expensive. As a rule, unlisted numbers are not available (with few exceptions) and unpublished numbers are NEVER available online even though online access is performed from the RBOC's databases.
