Ericsson may exit the cell phone business?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. About the struggling mobile phone makers, it was reported that if Ericsson cannot return to profitability in the cell phone business in twelve months, they "may exit the business".

A. They have a very strong product line-up right now. The R320 is the WAP/Business phone of choice, The R310 is out, and so is the A2618. Two tri-banders are in line, one with GPRS. In the business/high end segment, it's looking good. However, I'm sure Nokia will continue to dominate especially in the low-end segment, pre-paid & teenagers generate lot's of volume for cheaper phones. Motorola isn't considered on par with the others as far as GSM goes, still struggling with bad quality, massive repair percentage, cryptic menues. And, the ultimate brain-loss, the V series where You can't see the display without opening the phone....... IMHO the problem for the phone branch of Ericsson is that they haven't been able to sell the simpler models like the Nokia 5110 and 3210. When it comes to more advanced telephones I don't think any company could match them. It would be silly of Ericsson to stop designing mobile phones, since it has a value for developing the systems and as a brand. In fact they already decided to "sell" the phone manufacturing (of simpler models) to sub-contractors... I have a couple of Ericssons (and Nokias too) and am quite happy with them ........ but until recently , IMHO, Ericsson seemed not to be able to make a decent sized screen, Motorola still doesn't seem to be able to write simple user-friendly software, and so Nokia, who do both well, have the market. Even with modern Ericssons, there are too many buttons to press to get to the first number in a phone book. Furthermore their 'bottom of the range' phones have been, and still are, heavy, hard edged and not up to the perceived style of Nokias offerings. I guess an Interface where you have to press less than 1 Button is hard to do. Press the 2 for about a second and you are at the beginning of the phone book, the 6 will jump to the "m" and so on. For a name search it is also very easy, just press the left arrow once and start typing the name - you don't have to change into the phone book menu and select the search option. So 1 Button for the phone book and 1 button from where you cant start typing the whole name in, how can this be done with less buttons to press? You can dial any number stored in the phone book by typing the number and the # behind it and then pressing YES, e.g. 42# YES. It's a nice thing to have more than 10 speed dials, I store the home number of my friends at x0, the mobile number at x1 and additional numbers of him behind that, e.g. 30 home, 31 mobile, 33 work, 34 parents. To access the numbers stored in the phone book of the telephone you have to keep the # pressed for a second before the number, the # changes to a small telephone symbol.
