Finding My Bankruptcy RecordsQ. I filed bankruptcy about 20 years ago. I received a call from a collection agency for Chemical Bank today telling me I owe a huge amount of money on a visa card from about 20 years ago. This is the first I have heard from them in all that time. They said they had been sending me bills for all that time even though the address they had was about 20 years old. PROBLEM: I cannot find my records for my bankruptcy. I am sure these are a matter of public record. This bankruptcy was filed in Illinois. Does anyone have an idea of how I would go about getting my records? A. If it is 20 years ago, it is well over the status of limitation. They will collect no dime from you. In California, the status of limitation is 4 years. I cannot believe that if the status of limitation in Illinois is more than 20 years. First, Chicago has a wonderful feature where as anyone can walk in on Fridays, I think it is between 9-12, and get some free legal advice on their bankruptcy. Caution: Long wait, may not get there if you're not early. Try calling first and asking for your records, like others have said, there may be a charge for pulling the records that long ago.
