Finance Q&A

Question : from engineering degree to architecture

Edwards Finance > Architectural Engineering

Q. After 4 painful years in Chemical Engineering program I finally realized that this isn't the career path I wanted to take. I am considering to go back to school and study Architecture. My question is: Can I apply for a master program in Architecture since I already have a Bachelor degree or do I have to start over from Bachelor's program

A. -There are indeed, professional degree programs in architecture that are Masters of Architecture programs designed for those holding undergraduate degrees in other fields. Typically, these programs range from 3-4 years in length. The caveat, however, is that not all architectural programs in the US offer this particular appraoch. You'll need to check with the specific university(s) where you are considering enrolling. If you're not sure, contact the American Collegiate Schools of Architecdture, 1735 New York Ave, NW. Washington, DC, 20006, 202-785-2324, for information. -Also consider architectural engineering. ARCE's are engineers who design building systems (HVAC, structures, electrical, construction). With your BS in engineering, you could earn an MS ARCE in one to two years. Of my current four MS students, one is a ChemE, one an EE, one a ME, and only one is an ARCE by undergraduate degree!
