Cordless phone - Airport inteference?Q. In my continuing saga of tryihg to tweak my Airport network I have a couple of more questions. 1.Is Airport Extreme better in a network which includes mostly 802.11b devices? I only have one 802.11g device (my new iBook). 2. I need some now cordless phones. I now use a 900Mhz phone, so no inteference now, but the 2.4 and 5.8uGhz phones offere more of the features I really want/need in a new phone system. Question in a predominately 802.11b network, would a 5.8Ghz phone system cause inteference with my one 802.11g device? How about if I go to an 8902.11g Base Station (probably two set as a Wireless Distribution System) will a 5.8Ghz phone intefere with my network? Again, predominately 802.11b devices, but more 5.8Ghz devices will probably come as computers are upgraded. A. Both 802.11g and 802.11b operate on 2.4GHz, so 2.4GHz phones will interfere. You will want to avoid 2.4Ghz phones to avoid 802.11b and 802.11g interference. Both b and g use the 2.4 GHz frequencies (that's why it's easy to make 801.11g AP's backwards compatible). g is just a faster data rate, but modulated on the same carrier frequencies. I believe 802.11a and the new 5.x GHz phones may likely share the same frequency. So you're safe going 900Mhz or 5.xGHz with your new purchase. You don't want to mix a 2.4GHz phone and an 802.11b or 802.11g network as they all use the same frequencies. For what it's worth I run an 802.11b wifi router and recently purchased a 2.4GHz cordless phone. I don't have any interference at all, in spite of trying to verify that there would be some. Your mileage may vary. I have the original graphite airport, 802.11b. One unit feeding ~2400 sq ft two story house. Recently upgraded 900 Mhz phones to 5.8 Ghz, and also one 2.4 Ghz upstairs in my daughters room. The 5.8 Ghz base is downstairs, about 15 ft from the airport base. Have had no interference from it. The 2.4 Ghz phone completely knocks out the airport signal in my daughters room (iMac), and you can see if fall by walking an iBook down the hall into the room. But, ~20 ft away from the 2.4 Ghz base and you're fine.
