Wiring 4 line phone ?Q. I have a Comdial 3 line phone system in my small office. I recently bought a 4 line phone from Officemax. When I plug the cable from my Comdial phone into this new 4 line phone it will not work. When I pulled the cover off the phone jack I see that there are only 4 total wires connected to the jack that allow the use of 3 phone lines and the intercom. Is there a way to rewire this jack so the new 4 line phone would work throught the Comdial system? Currently I just wired it directly to the telco lines as a temporary fix. This new phone has a place to plug in a phone line for lines 1&2 and a second for lines 3&4. Obviously I only have 3 lines coming in at this time. A. Look carefully on the bottom of the Comdial phone and it should say something about not plugging it into a stadard outlet. Why would the 4-line phone work in a Comdial jack if the Comdial phone won't work in a regular jack? eBay usually has deals on Comdial system phones. If you want to add another multi-line set, check into an auction. You can probably pick up a matching phone for less than what you paid for the 4-line set. I run into this all the time. People all think a phone is a phone. Its not. Your Comdial phone is part of a phone system. It talks to the phone system. The line the phone is connected to is connected to it by the phone system. No, you can't use your 4-line phone directly connected to the Comdial system. It will not work because it doesn't speak Comdial. If your Comdial has an analog port, you could connect it to that, but it would just only line one on the phone would work, and it wouldn't really be line one; rather it would be intercom dialtone. You could connect your 4-line phone in front of the system, but your lights on the Comdial phones wouldn't light up when a line was in use on the 4-line, so someone could just pick up the same line you are on.
