3com Sportster technical question ?Q. I am using two 3Com Sportster 56K, ISA modems, Manufacturing Part Number: 005687-53 (the -53 is a Canadian version of the -03, supposedly it is functionally identical - that's what 3com says, anyway). My problem is when I call another 3com Sportster modem attached to a PBX Analog line. Whenever I call the modem from my modem, I get the following situation: A. My side: I get constant ringing until the operator/voice mail picks up Their side: After the 3 rings, it picks up, and tries to "hand-shake" (high-pitch modem noise), but fails to connect. I am assuming it has something to do with the Sportster when it picks up the call - I think it's "flashing" the line, that is it somehow simulating the "flash" function on the PBX analog line. So, thinking it's picking up the call, it switches to another line on the PBX system - thus the constant ringing on my side. It's not the Sportsters, it's the PBX. The number you are dialing is getting a ring but appears to be forwarding the call. Perhaps because it is set to forward after 3 or 4 rings (I have seen these "mis-count") to a coverage number. That would explain why you get the Operator/Voicemail answer and the several rings. If you listen close, you may hear the trip to coverage inthe ringing. Test this theory with a voice call to the number. If you find my theory to be correct, the "fix" is a simple one: Set the answering modem to to answer on 1 ring and you should avoid the problem. Or you could ask whoever maintains the PBX to set the modem's line to not go to coverage. A line that is for a modem shouldn't go to coverage anyway.
Other Questions: I need to pick some brains here. Is it true you cannot do intercom paging on Cisco phone systems as well as zone paging?
