bank's Visa Student credit card or American Express? would pay off each monthQ. bank's Visa Student credit card or American Express? would pay off each month I've been looking at some airline sites and American Express seems to have some benefits over a regular Visa card - but AMEX charges an annual fee. Is there any way to get this fee waived? We are mainly operating on a pay as we go basis so a debit card has been fine. However, we hope to finally buy a new computer and I would like the protection offered with using a Student credit card for that purchase. I am also interested in the rebate and flyer miles offered. I checked bankrate.com but I'm not interested in the rates as I'll be buying only what I can afford to pay off immediately. I've searched google and learned a lot. I apologize for asking a probably oft-asked question but I didn't find an answer in my search. Anyone have information? A. - I suggest you contact Amex and ask. I've never seen a discussion of this particular question, but I know that VISA and Mastercards which are sold or transferred to a new bank and begin to charge an annual fee will oftentimes waive the fee for existing card holders. - American Express also has no-fee, cashback cards. The one I have is co-branded with Costco, but I believe they have others. Check their website, or give them a call. IMO, their service is the best. - Since this is one of AE's primary sources of income, I don't think so. Remember, AE is not like other cards because you cannot carry a balance. YOU HAVE TO PAY IT OFF EVERY MONTH! This card makes money two ways; Annual fees to the user's; fees from the merchants who accept the card. One option might be to see if the company you work for has an American Express Corporate Card program. If so, and you can get one of the cards, then you would, at most, have to pay an annual fee of $5.00 (if your company doesn't pay it for you. But then most companies don't like employees using the corporate card for personal purchases. - AMEX offered by Costco does not have any fees. Plus you get a discount (I think 2%) on your purchases. In addition if you sign up for the Executive membership at Costco for $ 100/year you get an addtional 2% off Costco purchases. So on a $ 2500 a year spending on Costco and other AMEX charges you break even. This includes Costco gasoline too. Getting the Costco AMEX if you are a Costco member is a non-brainer for the 2% discount. Whetehr or not to get the Executive membership (for the extra 2%) depends on your spending pattern. On the other hand, VISA is more widely accepted than AMEX.
